Live Jazz Performances

Tash James started her singing career in London, fronting a seven-piece jazz-funk band, and with the London Youth Gospel Choir, who supported global star Mavis Staples for the TV recording of BBC’s Songs of Praise. More recently, she has performed with the Brisbane City Gospel Choir, the Little Red Company and The Con Artists Big Band.

A creative storyteller, Tash’s voice has been described as ‘captivating and magnetic’ (James Sandon, D’Addario artist). She has been mentored by some of contemporary jazz's finest, including BBC Jazz Award Winner Anita Wardell,  and Grammy Nominated Jazzmeia Horn, and is holds a Bachelor of Music degree (Jazz Voice) from the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University.

As a music educator, Tash mentors young musicians and vocalists of all ages at the Buttery Music School. Formerly a counsellor for children and young people, Tash brings her empathic and patient nature to her teaching.

A former nomad, Tash grew up in the Middle East, the UK and Hong Kong, and now calls Brisbane (Meanjin) home.  Her mixed Afro-Caribbean/English/

French/Portuguese heritage informs her art, and she carries this sense of fusion into her musical choices and performances.  When not working, she loves to travel to new places with her husband and their two young children.

I’m an arts lover and an arts-seller;

A story-guzzler and a storyteller.

Sometimes I conjure up tales and write them down.

And sometimes I sing, storytelling with sound.

I acknowledge the Turrbal and Jagera peoples as Traditional Owners of the land where I live, raise my children, write and sing.

I pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging, and celebrate and respect the culture, music and traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities who live and work on this land.
